Hating Religion?

In the 70's, there was a popular contemporary Christian song with the lyric, "I'm not religious. I just love the Lord."  Something about that never set right with me.  Now there is a new video out called "Why I Hate Religion But Love Jesus // Spoken Word."  I had the same reaction to this as that song from 35 years ago.  It comforts me to know I am not the only one.  Check out this post from Jay Kim's blog, Farewell to the Sea below.

I don’t know Jefferson Bethke.  He seems like a bright guy.  There’s no denying he’s thoughtful and talented and passionate.  His video Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus has been viewed more than 3 million times on youtube in just a couple of days.  The number will probably spike much higher as more and more people spread it virally.  I’m sure if I met him in person and we could chat over coffee, we’d agree on more things than not.  I’m glad his video is blowing up and compelling people to think.

But I’d like to humbly respond.
Let me start with this: I AM RELIGIOUS.  There’s a whole lot of baggage that comes with the word but I have to be honest. (READ MORE)

  1. I think the point is being missed here. Sure a few things might have been worded differently; but it is a poem so its worded like one, and we might not all agree on everything.

We as Christians are so caught up in our "religions" that we are blind to outsiders and protest anytime anyone speaks ill of our "way of doing things". The bigger pic that I see is over 3 million people are screaming for a change and we are not listening. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that today's church is declining. Religion is man made therefor imperfect. It was created for a healthy purpose but as turned into a interference from our calling.

I'm not saying that traditions and religious activities are bad, but when they become the focus of our love for Jesus, they become negative in nature. From what I know I would stress that religion is not biblical and would even been frowned upon by God. I would strongly suggest that if Jesus stepped foot on earth and wanted to run one our our beloved religions, he would be turned away. I can think of countless churches that wouldn't even grant him membership.

Religion = doing the same things over and over expecting different results.

Back to the point at hand, religion is not the issue here. We have made it the issue, but its not! I could spend $3 million making a video and it wouldn't get the attention this ones has. I might even put beer drinking naked people ridding rabbits and still could not even get there. The point - people are screaming for change. People are still looking for answers! We, religion, are not answering the call.

Go to the people - Love the people!
